The first thing we learn is our native language. It is the main means of communication. Only a few, use Filipino or English as a means of communicating with one another. It is only when the child enters the school that he is introduced to the Filipino or English language. Most often than not, even if we are old we still use our mother tongue.
Being familiar with our native language is good. We carry our being as an Ilocano everywhere we go. We can relate to our Fellow Ilocanoes and we understand one another. However, there comes a time that we need to be open to other languages like Filipino or English. This is because we need these in our work, education and specially to understand other people. Unless we are open, we can never grow. This is also our means of uplifting our morale and confidence to be a better person. We become competitive which will open the way to more opportunities for us. Thus developing our potentials.
However we must not forget our mother tongue, because it is in going back to what we have learned before that pushes us to move on. We should be humble and live simple. And one way is by using our native language. We should remember that what we are today is because of what we are then. We should be proud of our mother tongue. Forgetting our native language is like disregarding our past which is contributory to what we are today. I AM PROUD TO BE AN ILOCANO!!
